The effective management of land and water resources will drastically reduce the human miseries. Explain. (UPSC 2016)

Land and water are the base of livelihoods, food security and public health. When they are degraded or overused, scarcity turns into hunger, disease, debt and migration. Effective management can therefore cut misery at its root.

  • Food and income security: Protecting soil health, preventing erosion and using micro-irrigation raise farm output and stabilise rural incomes.
  • Water security: Rainwater harvesting, aquifer recharge and efficient canal management reduce drought stress and dependence on falling groundwater.
  • Health outcomes: Safe drinking water and reduced contamination lower water-borne diseases, while better soil and water support nutrition.
  • Social stability: Reliable land and water reduce distress migration, farmer distress and conflicts over scarce resources.

India’s shrinking per capita water availability and widespread land degradation show the urgency of action. Integrated watershed development, wastewater reuse, crop diversification and community participation can transform scarcity into resilience, making development more equitable and humane.
