Premier institutes should retain premier status, but it must rest on excellence, not privilege.
Why autonomy matters: IITs and IIMs need freedom to update curricula in AI, semiconductors, green tech, design and humanities, and to respond quickly to industry and research needs. Greater autonomy can improve global partnerships and innovation.
Why safeguards are needed: Student selection must respect constitutional reservations and inclusion. Common entrance tests like JEE and CAT support transparency, but admission policies should also reduce bias and widen access.
Growing challenges: Faculty shortages, weak research, student stress, and uneven expansion across new campuses threaten quality. Autonomy alone cannot solve these; funding, timely recruitment and mental health support are essential.
Thus, premier institutes should get graded academic freedom in course design and admissions, but within a framework of equity, accountability and public responsibility.
