India needs to strengthen measures to promote the pink revolution in food industry for ensuring better nutrition and health. Critically elucidate the statement. (UPSC 2013)

India’s pink revolution can improve nutrition by making eggs, poultry and meat more affordable, safe and available. It is important because these foods provide high-quality protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12, helping fight stunting, wasting and anaemia.

  • Why strengthen it: Livestock contributes 5.5% to national GVA and India is the 4th largest meat producer and 2nd largest egg producer.
  • Nutrition gains: Wider access to poultry and eggs can bridge protein gaps among children, women and low-income groups.
  • Food safety need: Modern slaughter, chilling, traceability and residue control can reduce contamination and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Economic value: Processing, cold chains and exports can raise farmer income and create jobs.
  • Critical concerns: Expansion must address disease control, antibiotic misuse, environmental stress, and ethical and cultural sensitivities.

Thus, India should promote a regulated, hygienic and sustainable pink revolution. It should not mean unchecked meat growth, but safe animal protein production that supports both public health and inclusive rural development.
