India has recently signed to become founding member of New Development Bank (NDB) and also the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). How will the role of the two Banks be different? Discuss the strategic significance of these two Banks for India. (UPSC 2014)

Role: The NDB is a BRICS-led bank with equal voting for founders, aimed at infrastructure and sustainable development in emerging economies, and it promotes local-currency lending. The AIIB is Asia-focused, with weighted voting by capital/GDP; it finances infrastructure projects in Asia, including sovereign and private-sector projects, and China is its largest shareholder.

Significance for India: Together they widen access to long-term finance for India’s huge infrastructure needs in transport, energy and urban services, reduce dependence on Western-dominated lenders, and give India a larger role in shaping reform of global financial governance.

Strategically, membership also lets India engage China-led institutions while preserving autonomy, diversify external funding sources, and strengthen its profile as a leader of the Global South.
