India and USA are two large democracies. Examine the basic tenets on which the two political systems are based. (UPSC 2018)
India and the USA are both democratic republics, yet their political systems rest on distinct constitutional ideas. The American system is designed to limit government power, while the Indian system seeks to balance liberty with social justice, unity and diversity.

- Constitutional supremacy: In both countries the Constitution is supreme. The US Constitution is brief and rigid, with difficult amendment; the Indian Constitution is detailed, flexible and easier to amend.
- Government and powers: The USA follows a presidential system, with a clear separation of powers and checks and balances. India follows a parliamentary system, where the Council of Ministers is responsible to the Lok Sabha, creating a fusion of powers.
- Federalism and judiciary: The USA has a dual federal structure with strong state autonomy. India has quasi-federalism with a stronger Centre. Both have independent judiciaries and judicial review, but India has an integrated court system.
- Rights and secularism: Both guarantee fundamental rights and rule of law. The US model stresses civil liberties and separation of church and state, while India combines rights with affirmative action and principled distance from religion.
Thus, both are liberal democracies, but the USA emphasises limited government and state autonomy, whereas India combines democracy with social transformation and constitutional flexibility.
