How was India benefitted from the contributions of Sir M. Visvesvaraya and Dr. M. S. Swaminathan in the fields of water engineering and agricultural science respectively? (UPSC 2019)

Sir M. Visvesvaraya and Dr. M. S. Swaminathan transformed India through practical science. One made water a tool of irrigation, flood control and urban security; the other made farming more productive and resilient.

  • Visvesvaraya: introduced the block system of irrigation, promoting fair and efficient water use.
  • Dam engineering: designed automatic sluice gates and improved reservoir safety and storage.
  • Major projects: the Krishna Raja Sagara dam boosted irrigation, power supply and agricultural growth in Mysuru-Mandya; Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar helped Hyderabad after floods.
  • Swaminathan: led the Green Revolution by spreading high-yielding wheat and rice, ending chronic food shortages.
  • Food security: his work raised grain output, reduced imports and made India more self-sufficient.
  • Sustainable agriculture: he later promoted the Evergreen Revolution, soil health and climate-resilient farming.

Together, they gave India stronger water management and higher farm productivity, supporting growth, livelihoods and national security.
