How far are India’s internal security challenges linked with border management particularly in view of the long porous borders with most countries of South Asia and Myanmar? (UPSC 2013)

India’s internal security challenges are closely linked with border management because most of its South Asian borders, and the Myanmar border, are long, porous and difficult to police. Weak control over movement enables infiltration, smuggling, insurgent movement, fake currency and drug trafficking.

  • Bangladesh border: Riverine stretches, chars and dense settlement make fencing difficult; illegal migration and cattle, gold and narcotics smuggling add social tension.
  • Myanmar border: Rugged hills and forests have allowed insurgent groups to seek shelter, while drugs and arms cross through remote routes.
  • Nepal and Bhutan borders: Open or lightly regulated borders aid legitimate movement, but are misused for arms, FICN, trafficking and espionage.
  • Pakistan border: It remains a zone of terror infiltration, drones, narcotics and hybrid warfare.

Thus, border management is not only a military task but also a policing, intelligence and development issue. Strong fencing where feasible, surveillance technology, joint patrolling, local intelligence and border-area development are essential for internal security.
