How does India see its place in the economic space of rising natural resource rich Africa? (UPSC 2014)
India sees Africa, rich in oil, gas and critical minerals, as both a strategic partner and a growth space. It aims to move beyond a buyer-seller link towards a long-term partnership based on mutual benefit, South-South solidarity and shared development.

- Resource security: India sources crude oil, gas, phosphates, gold and minerals from Africa to support energy needs, industry and the green transition.
- Market and investment space: Africa offers expanding markets for Indian pharmaceuticals, machinery, refined petroleum and services, while Indian firms invest in upstream energy and mining.
- Development partnership: India stresses capacity building, local value addition, skills, digital cooperation and Lines of Credit, rather than pure extraction.
- Strategic alignment: India supports Africa’s Agenda 2063, backed the AU’s G20 membership, and seeks stronger trade through AfCFTA and regional agreements.
Thus, India views rising resource-rich Africa as an equal economic partner, a source of secure supplies, and a key arena for inclusive, non-exploitative growth.
