How do ocean currents and water masses differ in their impacts on marine life and the coastal environment? Give suitable examples. (UPSC 2019)

Ocean currents and water masses both move seawater, but they affect the sea in different ways. Currents are largely horizontal and relatively fast, while water masses are large bodies of water with similar temperature, salinity and density that move slowly in the ocean interior.

  • Impact on marine life
Ocean currents They transport nutrients, larvae and plankton, and can create highly productive fishing zones where warm and cold currents meet. For example, the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current near the Grand Banks, and the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents near Japan, support rich fisheries.
Water masses They influence life mainly through oxygen supply, temperature structure and deep-sea circulation. Antarctic Bottom Water and North Atlantic Deep Water ventilate the deep ocean and sustain benthic ecosystems. Their density layers also separate surface and deep habitats.
  • Impact on coastal environment
Ocean currents They strongly shape coastal climate. Warm currents such as the North Atlantic Drift keep north-western Europe relatively mild and ice-free, while cold currents such as the Peru and Benguela currents promote coastal deserts like the Atacama and Namib, and often cause fog.
Water masses They matter more indirectly by driving upwelling and long-term sea-level changes. Upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich deep water along coasts such as Peru supports anchovy fisheries. Changes in deep-water formation can also alter regional sea level and coastal risk.

Thus, ocean currents mainly shape surface productivity, migration and coastal climate, while water masses control deep-ocean conditions, vertical layering and long-term coastal and marine stability. Both are vital, but their impacts operate at different depths, speeds and ecological scales.
