How different would have been the achievement of Indian independence without Mahatma Gandhi? Discuss. (UPSC 2015)

Indian independence was the outcome of multiple forces, but without Mahatma Gandhi it would have differed greatly in method, social base and perhaps timing.

• Nature of struggle: The movement might have been driven more by revolutionaries, labour unrest and regional uprisings. Gandhi’s satyagraha gave it a mass, non-violent and moral character.
• Mass participation: He drew peasants, workers and women into national politics through Champaran, Kheda, Non-Cooperation and Salt Satyagraha. Without him, nationalism could have remained narrower and more elite.
• Unity and legitimacy: His leadership helped widen Hindu-Muslim cooperation and social integration. In his absence, communal and regional divisions may have deepened earlier.

India might still have achieved freedom due to world-war pressures, post-1945 unrest and the naval mutiny, but likely through a slower, harsher and less cohesive struggle; Gandhi shaped not the demand for freedom, but its inclusive and legitimate character.
