Elaborate the scope and significance of the food processing industry in India. (UPSC 2022)

India’s food processing industry links farms to markets by converting farm produce into value-added, safe and marketable products. It is among the most dynamic manufacturing segments, with strong growth, large employment and rising export potential.

• Scope: India has a huge raw material base, being a top producer of milk, spices, fruits and vegetables. Diverse climates and a large consumer market create demand for RTE, RTC, dairy, marine and millet-based products.
• Economic importance: The sector’s GVA touched ₹2.24 lakh crore in FY24 and it contributes 7.93% to manufacturing GVA. It is the largest employer in organised manufacturing, supporting millions of jobs.
• Rural value creation: It reduces post-harvest losses, improves price realisation for farmers, and promotes rural industrialisation, especially through MSMEs and clusters.
• External linkages: Processed foods now form over one-fifth of agricultural exports, and 100% FDI under the automatic route supports capital and technology inflows.

Thus, food processing is vital for farm income, nutrition, employment and global competitiveness, making it a key driver of Viksit Bharat.
