Discuss the various social problems which originated out of the speedy process of urbanisation in India. (UPSC 2013)

Rapid urbanisation in India has created cities of opportunity, but also deep social distress. The pace of growth has often exceeded housing, services and governance capacity, producing exclusion and insecurity for many urban residents.

• Slums and housing stress: Migration and costly housing have led to overcrowding, insecure tenements and poor sanitation in informal settlements.
• Social inequality: Cities generate wealth, yet benefits are uneven. Migrants and informal workers face low wages, job insecurity and weak social security.
• Breakdown of family and community: Nuclear families, loneliness and elder neglect have risen as traditional support systems weaken.
• Crime and safety issues: Urban anonymity, drug abuse, cybercrime and crimes against women and children have increased fear and mistrust.
• Health and mental stress: Pollution, long commutes, stress and poor living conditions worsen physical and mental health.

Thus, urbanisation has produced severe social problems where growth is not matched by inclusive planning, affordable housing, basic services and strong local governance.
