Discuss each adjective attached to the word ‘Republic’ in the ‘Preamble’. Are they defendable in the present circumstances? (UPSC 2015)

Each adjective in the Preamble gives meaning to the Republic. They describe India’s constitutional identity, its goals, and the standards by which the State must be judged.

• Sovereign: India is free from external control and makes its own decisions in foreign policy, defence and digital regulation.
• Socialist: It means a welfare state with fair distribution, not state ownership of all property. DBT, health cover and poverty reduction show its relevance.
• Secular: The State treats all religions equally and protects freedom of faith. However, communal tensions test this ideal.
• Democratic: Power flows from the people through elections, rights and rule of law. Regular elections and judicial checks keep it alive.
• Republic: The head of State is elected, not hereditary, ensuring political equality.

These adjectives are largely defendable today, though each faces stress from inequality, polarisation and external pressures. Their real strength lies in guiding constitutional conduct and public policy.
