Critically evaluate the various resources of the oceans which can be harnessed to meet the resource crisis in the world. (UPSC 2014)

Oceans offer a wide range of resources that can ease the world’s resource crisis. They provide food, energy, minerals and bioactive compounds, but their use must be balanced with ecological limits and fair governance.

  • Food and livelihoods: Marine fisheries and offshore aquaculture can improve protein security and support coastal employment. Yet overfishing, pollution and warming seas already strain stocks.
  • Energy: Offshore wind, tidal, wave and ocean thermal energy can supply clean power and reduce fossil fuel dependence. High costs, weak grid links and storm damage remain major barriers.
  • Minerals: Deep-sea polymetallic nodules, crusts and gas hydrates contain nickel, cobalt and rare earths vital for batteries and green technologies. However, mining may damage fragile seabed ecosystems and needs strict regulation.
  • Biotechnology: Marine genetic resources can yield drugs, enzymes and industrial materials, but benefit-sharing and conservation are essential.

Thus, oceans can significantly help meet global shortages, but only through sustainable use, strong international rules and technology that protects marine life.
