Kanpur village to be developed as a solar model village under PM Surya Ghar scheme

Rampur Bhimsen, in the Kalyanpur development block of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is set to be developed as a solar model village under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The village was selected in 2025. The development was announced on 31 October 2026.

Project proposal and approval

A proposal has been prepared for a 110.48-kilowatt solar power plant costing more than ₹1 crore. The proposal and its detailed project report (DPR) have been approved, and officials have been directed to take the next steps in accordance with the rules.

The Basu Foundation surveyed the village and prepared the DPR in line with standards set by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. A project officer from the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency presented the DPR to the Kanpur District Magistrate, who approved the file.

Planned use of solar energy

The project aims to increase clean-energy use in the village and expand solar-powered facilities. The wider initiative includes solar facilities for eligible public buildings and assets, such as panchayat buildings. The state’s stated plan is to develop one solar model village in each district.

• Model village assessment: Under its Model Solar Village component, eligible villages are assessed on installed distributed-renewable capacity; the selected village in each district can receive ₹1 crore in central assistance.
• Residential subsidy rates: For households in most states, central assistance is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the next kW, capped at 3 kW.
• Subsidy disbursement: Residential subsidy applications use the National Portal; after installation, DISCOM inspection and commissioning, central financial assistance is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account.
