India’s Semiconductor Market Projected to Reach $200 Billion

India’s semiconductor market is projected to expand from about USD 64 billion in 2026 to USD 200 billion by 2035, while another estimate places the market at USD 300 billion by 2035. The market was valued at about USD 27 billion in 2021, and semiconductor imports rose from USD 5.7 billion in FY17 to USD 30.3 billion in FY25.

Semiconductor Market in India

India’s semiconductor market covers demand from electronics, automotive, industrial systems, telecommunications, data centres, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing. Semiconductors are materials with electrical conductivity between conductors and insulators, and they are used in chips, sensors, power devices, and integrated circuits.

Key Market Segments

Consumer electronics accounts for 30% of India’s semiconductor market, automotive applications account for 16%, and industrial applications account for 15%. Artificial Intelligence, data centres, telecommunications, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing are among the emerging demand areas for semiconductor products.

Design and Supply-Chain Context

India accounts for nearly 20% of the global chip design talent pool. This talent base includes engineers engaged in chip architecture, verification, physical design, and embedded systems across global and domestic firms.

Industry Reports and Projections

An EY–India Electronics and Semiconductor Association report titled “Semicon India 2.0: From capacity creation to ecosystem leadership” projected the market at USD 200 billion by 2035. A Deloitte report dated March 18, 2026 projected a higher figure of USD 300 billion by 2035.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Semiconductors are essential components in integrated circuits, power electronics, and communication devices.
  • India’s semiconductor imports increased more than fivefold between FY17 and FY25.
  • Consumer electronics is the largest listed segment in India’s semiconductor market at 30%.
  • India holds nearly 20% of the global chip design talent pool.

Static GK Points

The semiconductor value chain includes design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging. Chip fabrication plants are commonly called fabs, and semiconductor manufacturing requires high capital investment, specialised chemicals, and ultra-clean production environments.
