India’s First Immersive Language Museum Opens in Kolkata

India’s first immersive language museum, named Shabdalok or Museum of Word, was inaugurated on 19 July 2026 at the National Library campus in Kolkata. The museum functions under the Union Ministry of Culture and is housed in Belvedere House.

Shabdalok and Linguistic Heritage

Shabdalok is designed as a museum on India’s linguistic heritage and the historical evolution of languages. It presents nearly 380 languages through exhibits, artefacts, and technology-based displays. The museum also includes the 121 languages recorded in the 2011 Census of India.

Galleries and Display Features

The museum has nine galleries that cover different aspects of language history and its role in Indian civilisation and culture. The galleries use interactive touchscreens, gesture sensors, audio-visual installations, holograms, and immersive display systems.

Technology Used in the Museum

Shabdalok uses Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality in its visitor experience. These technologies are combined with digital exhibits to create an immersive format for language-related learning.
