India’s First Electric Heavy Truck Fleet Launched

India has taken a major step in green logistics with the launch of its first fleet of electric heavy trucks at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). The initiative, flagged off by Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, marks move towards sustainable port operations. The fleet currently includes 50 electric trucks with swappable batteries and will expand to 80 by the end of 2025. This effort supports India’s broader goal of decarbonising the logistics sector and promoting clean energy.

Introduction to Electric Heavy Trucks at JNPA

JNPA introduced India’s first fleet of electric heavy trucks designed for port logistics. These trucks use swappable batteries to reduce downtime and enhance operational efficiency. The fleet currently operates 50 trucks and plans to increase to 80 within the year. This makes JNPA home to the largest electric truck fleet at any Indian port.

Battery Swapping Station and Infrastructure

A dedicated heavy-duty battery swapping station was commissioned to support the new fleet. This station allows quick battery changes, reducing vehicle idle time. The infrastructure is crucial for maintaining continuous operations and demonstrates the feasibility of electric heavy vehicles in port logistics.

Ambitious Electrification Targets

JNPA aims to convert 90% of its internal fleet of nearly 600 heavy trucks to electric by December 2026. This target reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. The move aligns with India’s national goals for clean energy and environmental protection.

Broader Decarbonisation Efforts at Indian Ports

Ports across India are investing in renewable energy such as solar and wind power. They are also developing infrastructure for LNG and hydrogen fuels. Electrification of cargo handling equipment is another focus area. These efforts collectively contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of port operations.

JNPA’s Global Recognition and Progress

JNPA is ranked among the Top 25 ports worldwide in the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index. It has set records in container handling and advanced its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) development. The port has also made strides in digitalisation and green energy adoption.

Leadership and Vision

Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal brought into light the importance of this initiative for India’s future. He stated that JNPA’s electrification sends a strong message about India’s readiness to lead in sustainable port practices. JNPA Chairperson Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh described the launch as a paradigmatic leap towards a greener and more resilient future.
