India To Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

India has recently secured government approval to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Ahmedabad has been chosen as the proposed host city due to its advanced sporting infrastructure and vibrant sports culture. This decision follows the Indian Olympic Association’s endorsement and comes amid Canada’s withdrawal from the bidding process. The final host will be decided by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly later this year.

Government Approval and Bidding Process

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the submission of India’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The approval includes signing the Host Collaboration Agreement and providing necessary guarantees and financial support to the Gujarat government if the bid is successful. The Indian Olympic Association completed the formalities after submitting an Expression of Interest in March. The bid submission deadline is August 31, with the final decision expected in November.

Ahmedabad as the Ideal Host City

Ahmedabad is brought into light as the ideal venue for the Games. The city boasts world-class stadiums and training facilities. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium globally, has proven its capacity by hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final. The city is also preparing to host the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and is upgrading the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will include an aquatics centre, football stadium, and indoor sports arenas.

Elaborate Sports Programme Planned

Unlike the scaled-down 2026 Glasgow Games, India plans a comprehensive sports roster for 2030. The Indian Olympic Association aims to include all medal-winning disciplines like shooting, wrestling, and archery. Traditional Indian sports such as kabaddi and kho kho are also expected to feature. This contrasts with Glasgow’s limited 10-sport programme, which excluded several major sports due to budget constraints.

Economic and Social Impact

Hosting the Commonwealth Games is expected to boost local businesses and generate revenue. The event will enhance tourism, create jobs, and inspire youth participation in sports. It will also open opportunities in sports science, event management, logistics, media, and communications. The government views the Games as a tool to encourage national pride, unity, and motivation for aspiring athletes.

Future Ambitions and Infrastructure Development

India’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games aligns with its ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games. Ahmedabad is a front-runner for the Olympics as well, with ongoing infrastructure upgrades supporting this goal. The full budget for the 2030 Games is yet to be finalised and will depend on negotiations with Commonwealth Sport and the final sports roster.
