India Tests Agni-Prime Missile From Rail Launcher

India recently achieved milestone by successfully test-launching the Agni-Prime intermediate-range ballistic missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system. This launch is the first of its kind in the country and marks India’s advancing strategic deterrence capabilities.

Significance of Rail-Based Missile Launch

The Agni-Prime missile was launched from a specially designed mobile platform integrated with India’s national railway network. This innovation enables the missile to move across the country without restrictions. It offers cross-country mobility, faster reaction times, and reduced visibility, enhancing strategic flexibility and survivability.

Technical Features of Agni-Prime

Agni-Prime is a next-generation missile with a strike range of up to 2,000 kilometres. It is solid-fuelled and three-staged, which allows for quicker launch readiness and better control. The missile uses a canister launch system, improving storage, handling, and rapid deployment.

Strategic Impact and Deterrence

This test positions India among a select group of nations with rail-mobile canisterised missile technology. Rail mobility complicates enemy targeting and enhances deterrence by ensuring second-strike capability. It strengthens India’s strategic forces and adds to its nuclear triad potential.

Related Developments in India’s Missile Programme

Earlier in 2024, India successfully tested the Agni-5 missile under ‘Mission Divyastra’. Agni-5 is a longer-range missile capable of carrying Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs). MIRVs allow a single missile to strike multiple targets independently. Currently, India’s Strategic Forces Command operates single-warhead missiles, but MIRV capability marks a qualitative leap.

Role of Strategic Forces Command and DRDO

The Strategic Forces Command (SFC), established in 2003, is responsible for India’s nuclear arsenal management and deployment. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) leads missile development. Their collaboration ensures India’s growing strategic deterrence and technological advancements.

Future Prospects

The integration of missile systems with mobile platforms like rail networks indicates a shift towards more survivable and flexible nuclear forces. It reflects India’s commitment to modernising its defence posture and maintaining credible deterrence in a complex security environment.
