India-Africa Forum Summit Postponed Over Ebola Outbreak
The Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit was scheduled for New Delhi from 28 May to 31 May 2026. India and the African Union postponed the summit on 21 May 2026 because of an evolving public health situation in parts of Africa. The health situation refers to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
India-Africa Forum Summit
The India-Africa Forum Summit is a diplomatic platform between India and African states. The first summit was held in 2008, and the third summit was held in New Delhi in 2015 after a delay from its original 2014 schedule. The summit process is linked to India’s engagement with the African Union and African regional priorities.
Ebola Virus Disease
Ebola virus disease is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever caused by viruses of the genus Ebolavirus. The disease spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected animals. The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, and no vaccine is currently available for this strain.
World Health Organization and Public Health Emergency
The World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 16 May 2026. A Public Health Emergency of International Concern is a formal WHO classification used for events that require coordinated international response under the International Health Regulations, 2005. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is the African Union’s specialised public health agency.
