Gujarat Launches Major Education Support Schemes

The Gujarat government has intensified its focus on education with two major schemes launched in March 2024. These initiatives aim to provide financial aid to students, especially girls and science stream learners. The schemes align with the vision of a developed India by 2047. Since their inception, they have benefited over 12 lakh students with disbursements exceeding Rs 1,161 crore.
Namo Lakshmi Yojana
The Namo Lakshmi Yojana targets girls studying in Classes 9 to 12. It ensures no girl discontinues education due to financial challenges. The scheme covers schools under Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Girls already receiving other scholarships remain eligible. Each beneficiary receives Rs 50,000 over four years. More than 10.49 lakh girls have benefited, with total disbursements crossing Rs 1,000 crore. A dedicated Namo Lakshmi Portal manages the scheme for transparency and efficiency.
Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana
This scheme encourages students to pursue science in Classes 11 and 12. Eligibility requires at least 50 per cent marks in Class 10. It is open to students in government, grant-in-aid, and self-financed recognised schools. Financial aid totals Rs 25,000 over two years for eligible science stream students. Over 1.5 lakh students have benefitted, with disbursements exceeding Rs 161 crore. The scheme is managed through the Namo Saraswati Portal to ensure smooth implementation.
Alignment with National Vision
Both schemes reflect the Gujarat government’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat@2047. They aim to prepare students for future-ready education in the Amrit Kaal period. By supporting girl students and science learners, the schemes address gender equity and skill development. This focus on education is part of Gujarat’s larger development agenda under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership.
Implementation and Impact
The use of dedicated digital portals has enhanced transparency and ease of access. The schemes have increased enrolment and retention rates among girls and science students. Financial support helps reduce dropout rates caused by economic hardship. The initiatives also motivate students to pursue higher education and careers in science and technology fields. These efforts contribute to building a skilled and inclusive workforce for the future.
