Government Revises Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025

The Union Home Ministry notified changes to the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, on 1 June 2026. The revised provisions alter registration timelines for certain foreign visa holders, reporting duties for children born to foreign parents, and information-sharing requirements for medical institutions.

Registration Rules for Visa Holders

Foreigners entering India on a visa valid for 180 days or less must register with the authorities before the expiry of the 180-day period if they intend to stay beyond that period. The earlier requirement allowed registration within 14 days after the expiry of 180 days from arrival in India. For foreigners holding a visa for more than 180 days, where each stay is capped at 180 days, registration must also be completed before the 180-day limit expires.

Emergent Circumstances and Extended Stay

The revised rule provides that registration for a longer stay will be granted only in emergent circumstances. The change applies from 1 June 2026 under the notified Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025. The rule covers foreign nationals who remain in India under visa conditions linked to a 180-day stay limit.

Children Born to Foreign Parents

A sub-rule on electronic intimation to the registration officer within 30 days for visa services does not apply if either parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain the child’s Indian citizenship. If a child born to foreign parents later acquires foreign citizenship while in India, either parent must inform the registration officer within 30 days of the change. These provisions are part of the notification issued on 1 June 2026.
