First Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC)

The transportation of over-dimensional cargo (ODC) via waterways has reached a significant milestone in India, showcasing the country’s commitment to leveraging its inland water resources. Led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, this transformative endeavor is revolutionizing cargo transportation.

Inland Waterways Authority’s Role

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) took charge of transporting the ODC. The IWAI serves as the nodal agency responsible for the development and management of inland waterways across the country.

Expansion of Numaligarh Refinery

The ODC transportation played a pivotal role in the expansion of Numaligarh Refinery (NRL). The project aimed to enhance the refinery’s capacity from 3 MMT (Million Metric Tons) to an impressive 9 MMT. This ambitious undertaking sets the stage for increased production and growth in the petroleum sector.

MoU Signing

Last year, IWAI and NRL signed a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the transportation of ODC and Over Weight Cargo (OWC). The MoU solidified the partnership between the two entities, ensuring smooth logistics for NRL’s expansion.

MV-Marine 66

The first ODC was successfully transported from Kolkata to Numaligarh Refinery Jetty aboard the MV-Marine 66. This vessel played a crucial role in proving the viability and effectiveness of waterways as a means of cargo transportation.

Impressive Specifications

The Diesel Hydrotreating (DHT) reactor, a crucial component of the cargo, weighed a staggering 485 MT in net weight. With a length of 31.5 meters and a diameter of 8.00 meters, this substantial piece of equipment highlighted the scale and complexity of the transportation operation.

Efficient Waterway Route

The journey from Kolkata to Numaligarh took nearly three months, utilizing the Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR). This strategic route optimized efficiency and facilitated smooth transit, ensuring the successful completion of the transportation project.

Dredgers Enabling Success

To overcome logistical challenges, IWAI employed three essential dredgers: CSD Mandovi, CSD Brahmini, and HSD Jia Bhoroli. These dredgers played a vital role in ensuring navigability and maintaining optimal waterway conditions.
