First Indian Women in Constitutional and Public Offices
The integration of Indian women into institutional governance structures commenced prior to Independence, driven by the suffrage movement and constitutional reforms under British rule.
- First Woman Member of a Legislative Council in India: Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy was nominated to the Madras Legislative Council in 1926. She went on to become the first woman Deputy President of a legislative body in the world. She pioneered significant social legislation, including the abolition of the Devadasi system.
- First Woman Cabinet Minister in British India: Vijayalakshmi Pandit was appointed as the Minister of Local Self-Government and Public Health for the United Provinces in 1937 following the provincial elections under the Government of India Act 1935.
- First Indian Women in the Constituent Assembly: Out of 389 initial members, 15 women were part of the body that drafted the Constitution of India. Notable members included Ammu Swaminathan, Dakshayani Velayudhan (the only Dalit woman in the Assembly), Begum Aizaz Rasul (the only Muslim woman), Durgabai Deshmukh, and Hansa Jivraj Mehta.

Following the adoption of the Constitution, several pioneering women broke gender barriers to lead sovereign constitutional and statutory institutions.
- First Woman President of India: Pratibha Devisingh Patil served as the 12th President of India from 2007 to 2012, operating as the supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces under Article 53.
- First Woman Prime Minister of India: Indira Gandhi assumed office in 1966. She remains the only woman to serve as the head of the Union Council of Ministers. She also held additional charges as the first woman Minister of Defence (1975) and Minister of External Affairs.
- First Woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha: Meira Kumar, a former Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha (2009–2014) under Article 93.
- First Woman Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha: Violet Alva served as the Deputy Chairman of the Council of States from 1962 to 1969 under Article 89.
- First Woman Cabinet Minister of Independent India: Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was appointed to the first Cabinet in 1947, holding the portfolio of Health. She was instrumental in founding the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and served as the President of the World Health Assembly in 1950.
State Executive and Legislative Offices
- First Woman Governor of an Indian State: Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the Governor of the United Provinces (later Uttar Pradesh) on August 15, 1947, serving until her death in 1949.
- First Woman Chief Minister of an Indian State: Sucheta Kripalani served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 1963 to 1967. She had previously been a member of the sub-committee that drafted the Indian Constitution.
- First Woman Speaker of a State Legislative Assembly: Shanno Devi presided over the Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1966.

- First Woman Judge of the Supreme Court of India: Justice M. Fathima Beevi was appointed to the apex court in 1989, making her the first Muslim woman to serve in any higher judiciary branch in Asia.
- First Woman Judge of a High Court in India: Justice Anna Chandy was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court in 1959. She had previously been appointed as a district judge in 1948, making her one of the earliest female judges in the British Commonwealth.
- First Woman Chief Justice of a State High Court: Justice Leila Seth was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 1991. She was also the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court.
Constitutional and Statutory Public Bodies
- First Woman Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC): Rose Millian Bathew Kharbuli headed the apex recruitment body constituted under Article 315 from September 1992 to August 1996.
- First Woman Chief Election Commissioner of India: V. S. Ramadevi served as the 9th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) under Article 324 for a brief period in late 1940. She later served as the first woman Governor of Karnataka.
- First Woman Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) / Accountant General: While India has not yet had a woman CAG under Article 148, regulatory and financial accounting arms have been led by pioneers like Shashikala Vora, the first woman to clear the Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS).

Indian women also assumed leadership roles representing the sovereign state at international organizations and diplomatic missions.
- First Woman President of the United Nations General Assembly: Vijayalakshmi Pandit was elected as the President of the 8th session of the UNGA in 1953, becoming the first woman in the world to achieve this position.
- First Woman Indian Ambassador: Vijayalakshmi Pandit served as India’s ambassador to top global powers, leading diplomatic missions to the Soviet Union (1947–1949), the United States (1949–1951), and as the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
- First Woman Foreign Secretary of India: Chonira Belliappa Muthamma was the first woman to clear the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) examinations in 1948 and went on to become the first woman ambassador (to Hungary). Later, Chokila Iyer was appointed as the first woman Foreign Secretary of India in 2001.
