Delhi Launches Monument Adoption Heritage Schemes

Delhi approved two heritage conservation schemes on 30 June 2026 for 75 monuments under the archaeology department of the Delhi government. The schemes apply to monuments protected under the Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 2004, and outside the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Monument Adoption Scheme

The Delhi Chief Minister Monument Adoption Scheme allows private organisations, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, public sector undertakings, and individuals to participate through a public-private partnership model. Under this scheme, “Monument Mitras” adopt monuments for five years and fund visitor amenities such as cleanliness, security, and lighting.

Grant-in-Aid for Conservation Works

The Grant-in-Aid Scheme for Conservation, Restoration and Development Works of Monuments provides financial assistance of up to ₹2 crore to eligible and specialised institutions. The scheme covers core conservation, restoration, and technical works for heritage structures under the Delhi government’s protection.

Heritage Sites and Administrative Features

The adoption list includes the haveli of Mirza Ghalib, Bhuli Bhatiyari ka mahal, Mutiny Memorial, and the Dara Shikoh library building. The government has projected annual maintenance savings of about ₹4.5 lakh per monument through the adoption model.
