Balod Becomes India’s First Child Marriage-Free District

The state of Chhattisgarh has achieved a landmark success in social reform. Balod district has been officially declared the first child marriage-free district in India. This milestone came under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Child Marriage-Free India’ campaign launched in August 2024. No cases of child marriage were reported in Balod for two consecutive years. The district’s 436 gram panchayats and nine urban bodies have received formal certificates confirming this status. This achievement is seen as a model for other regions aiming to eradicate child marriage.

Background and Campaign

The ‘Child Marriage-Free India’ campaign began in August 2024 to eliminate child marriage nationwide. It aims to protect children’s rights and promote social development. Chhattisgarh government prioritised this goal, making it a key part of its social policy. The campaign involves legal enforcement, awareness drives, and community participation.

Certification Process

The certification of child marriage-free status requires strict verification. Authorities reviewed records to confirm no cases had occurred for two years. Document verification and legal procedures were completed before granting certificates. This process ensures transparency and credibility.

Role of Local Administration and Community

Balod’s success is credited to coordinated efforts. The district collector brought into light the role of administration, elected representatives, anganwadi workers, and local communities. Their collaboration helped identify risks and prevent child marriages. Grassroots involvement was crucial in changing social attitudes.

Expansion and Future Goals

Following Balod, 75 gram panchayats in Surajpur district were also declared child marriage-free. The state government aims to declare all districts child marriage-free by 2028-29. Certification of more panchayats and urban bodies is ongoing. The government views this as a long-term social transformation rather than a short campaign.

Support from UNICEF and Awareness Efforts

UNICEF provided technical support and helped design awareness programmes. Monitoring mechanisms were also established to track progress. The partnership between government and international agencies strengthened the campaign’s impact. Awareness among families and communities was key to success.
