Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of conditions associated with brain development. People with autism often have co-occurring conditions such as epilepsy, depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), difficulty sleeping, and self-injury. Intellectual capacity of autistic people are unique and distinctive, extending from intense impairment to superior levels. The term “Autism Spectrum” refers to a range of characteristics, including difficulties with communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors.
Observing World Autism Day
The UNGA unanimously declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. On this day, individual autism organizations across the globe come together to do research, diagnoses, treatment, and acceptance for those with a developmental path affected by autism. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities’ main purpose is to promote, safeguard and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all PwDs, including those with autism.
Theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2023
The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2023 is “Transforming the narrative: Contributions at home, at work, in the arts, and in policymaking”. The aim of this theme is to bring awareness about autism, thus accepting and supporting autistic people in society and the workplace. Appropriate assistance, accommodation, and acceptance of this neurological variation enable all people on the Autism Spectrum to enjoy equal opportunity and effective participation in society. It is important to understand that the abilities and needs of autistic people vary and can evolve.
Living with Autism
It is a common misconception that all autistic people have the same abilities and needs. Some people with autism are highly functioning and require minimal support, while others require life-long care and support. People with severe disabilities related to autism cannot live independently, and therefore, require life-long care and support.
