Who was chairman of Union Carbide when Bhopal tragedy occurred?
Warren Anderson was the head of the Union Carbide when the Bhopal gas Tragedy occurred on December 3, 1984. Bhopal gas tragedy is counted among the world’s worst industrial and chemical disasters. on December 3, 1984, more than 40 Tonnes of poisonous methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked and 4000 people were killed immediately. On December 7, 1984, Anderson was arrested and released on bail by the Madhya Pradesh Police. Later he fled to India and never returned. On February 1, 1992 he was declared a fugitive as he failed to appear before a court in Bhopal.

Please note that Union Carbide India Ltd. was an American company but was owned by Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) (51%) and Indian investors (49%), including the Government of India.

Later in 1989, the Supreme Court of India directed UCC and UCIL to pay a total of $470 million in full settlement of all claims arising from the tragedy. The full payment was made on 24th February 2010.

Warren Anderson got retired in 1986. In 2009 an arrest warrant was issued against him. On June 7, 2010, the chief judicial magistrate in Bhopal has found seven former employees of Union Carbide India Ltd guilty of criminal negligence in the tragedy.
