What is Silent Barker?
The US Space Force, in collaboration with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), is gearing up to launch a satellite constellation called Silent Barker. This constellation is specifically designed to address the growing concerns surrounding Chinese and Russian space vehicles that have the potential to disable or damage orbiting objects.
Silent Barker: Tracking Threats in Geosynchronous Orbit
The primary objective of the Silent Barker satellite constellation is to track and monitor Chinese or Russian space vehicles that pose a threat to critical orbiting objects. By deploying this constellation, the US Space Force aims to enhance its ability to detect, detect, and track potential threats against high-value US systems.
Placing Satellites in Geosynchronous Orbit
The satellites of the Silent Barker constellation will be positioned approximately 22,000 miles (35,400 kilometers) above the Earth in geosynchronous orbit. This orbit allows the satellites to match the Earth’s rotational speed, ensuring continuous coverage and effective monitoring capabilities.
Operational Support by Boeing Co.-Lockheed Martin Corp.’s United Launch Alliance
To facilitate the launch of the Silent Barker satellites, the operational support will be provided by the Boeing Co.-Lockheed Martin Corp.’s United Launch Alliance. The Atlas V booster will be employed for this crucial mission, ensuring the successful deployment of the satellite constellation.
Enhancing Space Surveillance in Response to Adversary Satellites
Silent Barker is a direct response to the efforts made by China and Russia to develop systems capable of targeting and disabling satellites. The constellation significantly increases the US Space Force’s ability to track adversary satellites that may maneuver in proximity to American assets in space.
Addressing Concerns of Space Weaponization
China’s and Russia’s weapons and counterspace operations have raised concerns among US officials. The Silent Barker satellite constellation aims to mitigate these concerns by providing timely indications and warnings of potential threats against US and allied satellites.
Overcoming Limitations of Ground-Based Sensors
Surveillance from space offers significant advantages over ground-based sensors. It overcomes limitations imposed by distance, geography, and weather, enabling 24-hour collection of satellite data. Silent Barker’s space-based surveillance capabilities fill critical observation gaps and offer a comprehensive view of activities in orbit.
Multiple Space Vehicles for Enhanced Coverage
While the exact number of satellites comprising the Silent Barker constellation remains undisclosed, it is confirmed that multiple space vehicles will be deployed. This approach ensures broader coverage and allows for effective monitoring of adversary satellites.
