What is Autochthonous in Geography?
This word is used for two phenomena.
- Strata that have been shifted little by movements of earth from their original sites, e.g., the Helvetides on the N. side of the Alpine ranges in Switzerland and Austria.
- Describes the formation of coal from in situ vegetation.
