What is Autochthonous in Geography?

This word is used for two phenomena.

  1. Strata that have been shifted little by movements of earth from their original sites, e.g., the Helvetides on the N. side of the Alpine ranges in Switzerland and Austria.
  2. Describes the formation of coal from in situ vegetation.
