The United States will host the next G-20 Summit on September 24 and 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The first G-20 meeting was held in November last year, while Britain hosted the second summit in April. At the Pittsburgh Summit, President Barack Obama will meet with leaders representing 85 percent of the world’s economy, take stock of the progress made since the Washington and London summits, and discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the global economic and financial crisis.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has said that the issue of content code for television news channels will be discussed with all stake holders to find a solution. She also said that with Commonwealth Games scheduled for next year, her ministry would step up preparations to ensure high quality broadcast of the mega sporting event.

With inflation down there is no reason to keep the key policy rates high,” CII president Venu Srinivasan said, adding that interest rates in India remain high compared to many other economies. He said the key policy rates should be cut by at least 50 basis points. Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry have asked for cut in interest rates to spur the sagging economy while presenting 100-day action plans to the government.

FICCI president is Harsh Pati Singhania . The Prime Minister Office has started working on the 100-day action plan for the new government and at the same time different ministries are also finalising priority programmes for the first three months.

A report released this spring from the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, a Paris-based group of 30 countries with market economies, that shows Nordic countries like Denmark, Sweden and Norway as the hardest-working countries. Iceland has topped the list.

Braving the global recessionary trends, India managed 6.7 per cent economic growth in 2008-09 despite the manufacturing sector recording a dismal performance. A 5.8 per cent growth rate during the last quarter of the fiscal, at a time when most developed economies have shrunk, puts India among the top-most growing nations.

Biotechnology firm Biocon Ltd has announced the launch of ‘Basalog’ an insulin used in the treatment of diabetes in a row to developing affordable Insulin based therapies to manage this disease burden… It is our endeavour to play a key role in combating diabetes world over,” Biocon chairman and managing director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw said.

Maharashtra government is formulating a policy for disposal of increasing amount of electronic waste (e-waste) in cities like Mumbai and Pune in a scientific manner. The state government’s environment department and MMRDA are working on the policy to tackle e-waste which has assumed serious proportions. Each year, Maharashtra produces 26,270 tonnes of e-waste which contains hazardous elements like Palladium and Cadmium. However, the waste is dumped at various places without recycling. The maximum e-waste dumping is in Mumbai and Pune and poses health hazard and environmental issues, she said. Lead and metal pieces from the e-waste are mixed with landfill and groundwater, she added.

The organisers of next year’s Commonwealth Games in the capital will try to use the mega sporting event as a platform to promote India as a perfect destination for business opportunities. The Confederation of Indian Industries has joined hands with the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to host business promotion meets across all the 71 Commonwealth countries before the event commences in October.
