State of Emergency in New Zealand after Cyclone Gabrielle

Cyclone Gabrielle hit the New Zealand coast and caused severe damage. Heavy rains, floods, and landslides forced the New Zealand government to declare an emergency. It was a Category 3 cyclone. PM of NZ announced a 7.3 million USD relief package. Winds reached a speed of 140 km/hr. Auckland was badly hit. Homes were left powerless. More than 500 flights were cancelled.

How does New Zealand work during Emergencies?

The National Emergency Management Agency takes full control. It operates directly under PM. It connects the local bodies and the PM directly.

When can the NZ Govt declare an emergency?

The NZ govt. can declare three different types of emergencies namely local emergency, national emergency, and regional emergency. The emergency shall be declared when there is a threat to biosecurity, or defence, during earthquakes, epidemics, wildfires, etc.

El Nino and La Nina on Australian and New Zealand Cyclones

They face more cyclones during LA NINA. During EL NINO, the region becomes dry and there are wildfires. EL NINO and LA NINA develop during Mar-Jun. Their intensities reach a peak during Nov-Feb. Their effects weaken during summer.
