Prime Minister’s National Award for Children

The Prime Minister National Award for Children is also known as the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. It is conferred by the President of India. In 2023, the president will present this award to 11 children (six boys and five girls) from 11 different states and union territories.

  • The award is presented to children belonging to the age group 5 to 18 years
  • Categories in the award: Innovation, art and culture, sports, social service, bravery, and scholastic
  • Award recipients will receive a certificate, a medal, and a cash prize of one lakh rupees

Where is the award presented?

The president presents the award in the Durbar Hall of his residence, that is, the Rashtrapati Bhavan. At the Durbar Hall to be precise.

Categories in the award

  • Bal Kalyan Puraskar: Children of age less than 18 years are awarded in this category
  • Bal Shakti Puraskar: Children of age between 5 years and 18 years are awarded in this category

Previous Names

  • The Bal Kalyan Puraskar was earlier known by the name National Child Welfare Awards. It was presented by the Women and Child Development Ministry.
  • The Bal Shakti Puraskar was earlier known as the National Child Award and it was presented to the Non-Governmental Organizations working for child welfare.

Role of Prime Minister

Though the award is named after the Prime Minister of the country, he has no special role here. However, the prime minister meets the recipients on the day.
