NASA plans to monitor volcanoes from space
NASA is in plans to monitor volcanoes, earthquakes and other land deformation events from space using InSAR.
InSAR or Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar is a remote sensing technique that uses SAR (synthetic aperture radar) images to monitor natural hazards like volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, glacial movement and other land deformation events.
NISAR or NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar is a joint mission between NASA and ISRO set to be launched in 2022. NISAR is the first dedicated InSAR satellite of NASA that is being developed. It is to work in tandem with a constellation of small InSAR satellites to study the land deformation activities across the world.
CIRES or CubeSat Imaging Radar for Earth Sciences is to help decision makers and disaster management personnel gain key information regarding hazardous events like volcanoes and earthquakes. It is equipped with S-band Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar to survey the ground conditions even when obscured by vegetation.
