FSSAI ‘Eat Right Campus’
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently certified four police stations of New Delhi district as ‘Eat Right Campus’.
- Premises in Delhi are recognised as “Eat Right Campus” under the “Sehatmand Delhi Programme”.
- Sejarmand Delhi Programme was launched as a part of “Eat Right India”, which is a flagship mission of FSSAI,
- Eat Right India initiative was launched with the aim of ensuring that the citizens in India get safe and nutritious food.
Aim of ‘Eat Right Campus’ initiative
FSSAI launched the “Eat Right Campus Initiative” with the aim of promoting safe, healthy and sustainable food in campuses like universities, schools, colleges, hospitals, workplaces, tea estates etc. across India. Its objective is to improve health of people and planet as well as promote social and economic development of the country.
What is the need of this initiative?
Today, in fast-paced environment, working professionals and students are spending majority of their time at the workplace or college campus. Long working hours, long client meetings and classes coupled with short deadlines are increasing the time spent at these places. Thus, they are left with little time left for eating healthy or exercising. Most people eat at least one meal in campus settings. But, eating safe and healthy food is significant in the light of increasing number of foods borne diseases, non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart related diseases. In India, 196 million people are undernourished. Furthermore, 135 million are overweight or obese. Number of foodborne illnesses are also increasing year by year. Thus, this initiative is a significant step to ensure safe and nutritious food.
Eat Right India Initiative
Eat Right India Initiative was launched by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This movement was launched with the aim of cutting down salt, sugar and oil consumption by 30% over three years. It also aims to enable and engage citizens in improving their health and well being by making right food choices. It was inspired by “focus on preventive and promotive healthcare” in National Health Policy 2017 and initiatives like POSHAN Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat, and Swachh Bharat Mission.
Three themes of the Eat Right India
Eat Right India movement is based on three key themes:
- Eat Safe
- Eat Healthy, and
- Eat Sustainable.
