August 12: International Youth Day 

The International Youth Day (IYD) is observed every year on August 12 to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth.
2016 Theme:The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”.
The focus of theme is on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.
Sustainable consumption entails the use of services and products that meet the basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations.
Background

  • The International Youth Day (IYD) was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by passing resolution 54/120 on 17 December 1999. It first was observed on 12 August, 2000.
  • The day was instituted by UNHA on the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth held in Lisbon (Portugal) from 8 to 12 August 1998.
