Shivraj Singh Chouhan Inaugurates ICAR-IIMR Facility, Focuses on Maize for Farmer Empowerment

The Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, recently visited the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR-IIMR) in Ludhiana, Punjab. He inaugurated a new administrative building and engaged with farmers, maize stakeholders, and women Self-Help Groups. The visit brought into light the government’s focus on maize as a key crop for agricultural diversification and rural prosperity in Punjab.

Government Initiatives in Punjab Agriculture

The central government has prioritised increasing foodgrain production while reducing costs and raising farmers’ incomes. Punjab, a major wheat and rice producer, is encouraged to diversify into maize cultivation. Maize is valued for its multiple uses beyond food, including industrial applications. It is also a water-saving alternative to paddy, offering better returns to farmers.

Role of Indian Institute of Maize Research

ICAR-IIMR plays a critical role in enhancing maize productivity and promoting crop diversification. The institute’s research supports sustainable farming practices and helps farmers adapt to changing agricultural demands. The new administrative building will strengthen its capacity to serve Punjab’s agricultural community.

Financial Support for Farmers

The government has allocated ₹74 crore for free wheat seed distribution to compensate Punjab farmers for crop losses. Additional funds have been approved for mustard and other seeds. Under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, ₹222 crore has been transferred in advance to over 11 lakh farmers. Assistance is also extended to horticulture farmers affected by recent challenges through the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).

Flood Relief and Rural Development

Punjab has received a ₹1,600 crore central relief package for flood-affected families. Each family will get ₹1.60 lakh for housing reconstruction, including ₹1.20 lakh for building and ₹40,000 for labour and sanitation. This support aims to restore livelihoods and infrastructure in rural areas.

Promotion of Swadeshi and Local Economy

The Union Minister emphasised the importance of prioritising Indian-made products. Supporting indigenous goods helps empower local artisans, retain wealth within the country, and strengthen the national economy. This approach aligns with the government’s vision of self-reliance and sustainable rural development.
