Semicon India 2025

India’s semiconductor sector took a major leap forward with the inauguration of Semicon India 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd September at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. The three-day event from 2nd to 4th September is set to witness over 20,750 participants, including 2,500 delegates from 48 countries, to discuss India’s growing role in global semiconductor design and manufacturing.
Overview
Semicon India 2025 aimed to catalyse a robust and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem. Key topics included semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs), advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, research and development, and investment opportunities. The conference also focused on state-level policy implementation and international cooperation to strengthen India’s semiconductor industry.
Prime Minister’s Role and Vision
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the event and is set to participate in the CEOs roundtable on 3rd September. His vision is to position India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development. The conference marked the ‘Perform’ phase of the national initiative, following the earlier ‘Reform’ and ‘Transform’ phases. This phase emphasises the implementation and scaling of semiconductor projects across the country.
Key Projects and Infrastructure Development
Four new semiconductor facilities were sanctioned recently, focusing on packaging, silicon carbide, discrete semiconductors, and 3D glass technology. The Micron facility, approved in 2023, is nearing completion. Major fab projects are underway in Gujarat (Dholera and Sanand) and Assam (Jagi Road). These developments are supported by workforce training and logistics infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.
Policy and Incentives
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is designed to expand the MSME base by creating upstream and downstream value chains. The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme promotes innovation and design capabilities. The government aims to encourage private sector participation and support homegrown semiconductor companies through incentives and collaborations, focusing on product development and intellectual property rights.
International Participation
Semicon India 2025 hosted six country roundtable discussions and featured country pavilions. Over 50 global technology leaders shared insights, reinforcing India’s position on the global semiconductor map. The event also included dedicated spaces for startups and workforce development, denoting the importance of innovation and skill enhancement.
Growth of Semicon India Conferences
Since its launch in 2022, Semicon India has become a flagship platform for semiconductor advancement. Previous editions were held in Bengaluru (2022), Gandhinagar (2023), and Greater Noida (2024). The conferences aim to showcase technological progress and policy frameworks to boost the semiconductor industry in India and worldwide.
