Rajnath Singh Attends SCO Defence Ministers’ Meet

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for April 29, 2026. The meeting comes at a time of rising global security concerns, especially due to the ongoing tensions in West Asia. India is expected to emphasise regional stability, international peace and stronger cooperation against terrorism and extremism during the high-level discussions.

SCO Meeting Amid West Asia Crisis

This year’s SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the escalating conflict in West Asia. Defence ministers from member countries are likely to discuss the regional impact of the crisis and possible steps to reduce instability. Key issues on the agenda include defence cooperation, counter-terrorism, international peace and collective security. The organisation remains one of the largest political and economic groupings in Eurasia and plays an important role in regional strategic coordination.

India Reaffirms Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism

Before leaving for Bishkek, Rajnath Singh stated that India would strongly present its commitment to global peace and security. He said India would reiterate its policy of “Zero Tolerance for Terrorism and Extremism” while addressing the meeting. This position remains central to India’s foreign and security policy, particularly in multilateral forums like the SCO where regional security challenges remain a major concern.

Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines

Apart from the main SCO meeting, Rajnath Singh is expected to hold bilateral discussions with defence ministers of several participating countries. These meetings are likely to focus on defence cooperation, strategic partnerships and regional security concerns. On his arrival in Bishkek, he received a traditional welcome and was offered Borsok, a well-known Kyrgyz delicacy, as part of the ceremonial reception.
