The Nagorno-Karabakh territory lies in the mountainous South Caucasus region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a war over this region in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and it has been the trigger for further violence. In 2020, thousands of people were reported killed. Recently Azerbaijan launched a military operation against the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The Indian Navy and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on technical research and development in various engineering fields related to defense technologies.
The MoU aims to promote academic cooperation, enhance scientific understanding, and facilitate capacity building, equipment development, and faculty exchange between the two organizations.

The 108 feet tall statue of Hindu saint Adi Shankaracharya, named ‘Ekatmata Ki Pratima’ (Statue of Oneness), was unveiled at Omkareshwar, in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister recently unveiled the statue, which portrays Shankaracharya during his visit to Omkareshwar at the age of 12.

British Prime Minister is Rishi Sunak is scheduled to convene the Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety summit in November, this year.
It will bring together governments, technology firms, and scholars to discuss on the hazards presented by the technology. The European Union is considering whether to send officials to Britain’s summit.

In the wake of a surge in dengue fever cases in Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) and Preventive Medicine of the state has invoked provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act 1939, for control of the disease.
Failure to report a notifiable disease, failure to comply with notices requiring measures against mosquito breeding or interrupting mosquito control work would attract penalties under the Act.

Agriculture scientist Swati Nayak became the third Indian agriculture scientist to win the prestigious Norman E. Borlaug Award for 2023, for Field Research and Application, with the World Food Prize Foundation.
Ms Nayak is the South Asia Lead for Seed System and Product Management at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in New Delhi.

Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat won India’s first medal of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a silver in the men’s lightweight double sculls.
At Tokyo 2020, this duo finished 11^th, which is India’s best-ever finish in Olympics rowing. Later, Babu Lal Yadav and Lekh Ram won bronze in the men’s pair final.

Recently, the Third Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge, designated Yard 77 (LSAM 9), was launched at Guttenadeevi, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh.
This barge is equipped with both primary and supplementary systems and components from domestic manufacturers.

Tigist Assefa from Ethiopia recently broke the women’s marathon world record at the Berlin Marathon.
The 26-year-old runner broke the record by crossing the finish line in two hours, eleven minutes, and fifty-three seconds.

Notes:
The Center has granted an extension to Amit Khare, a retired IAS officer, to continue serving as an Adviser to the Prime Minister.
His extension will be in effect until the Prime Minister’s term concludes, aligning with the Prime Minister’s tenure. Khare assumed the position of Adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi under a two-year contract, starting from 2021.
