The United Nations has released a report stating that the goal of achieving gender equality by 2030, as set by the U.N., is unlikely to be realized due to deeply ingrained biases against women in various sectors such as health, education, employment, and politics.
The report, titled “The Gender Snapshot 2023,” by UN Women and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, highlights that active resistance to gender equality and chronic underinvestment are key factors slowing progress and even leading to reversals in some cases.

A new study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reveals a significant increase in global cancer cases among adults under 50, with early-onset cancer cases rising by 79.1% between 1990 and 2019.
The study attributes this trend to changes in diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Breast cancer saw the highest increase in new cases and deaths.

The Government of India is set to launch Vishwakarma Yojana at 70 locations across India on September 17, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
The scheme was announced during the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech and is aimed at benefiting skilled individuals in traditional craftsmanship. Over the next five years, the program will allocate an expenditure of 13,000 crores.

The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), in partnership with UNICEF and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), organized a workshop on Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) in Mumbai.
The BRSR framework, rooted in the nine principles of the National Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC), mandates top 1000 listed companies to disclose their performance on environmental, social, and governance aspects.

Tamil Nadu’s Vithya Ramraj has won the women’s 400m in a personal best 52.40s at the Indian Grand Prix-5 athletics in Chandigarh.
Himanshi, the fastest quarter-miler in the Asiad relay team with her 51.76s at the recent inter-State Nationals in Bhubaneswar, could only finish 15th overall.

India’s retail inflation eased to 6.83 per cent in August from 7.44 per cent in July as vegetable prices cooled somewhat compared to the previous month, as per the National Statistical Office (NSO) data.
At 6.83 per cent, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation print for August is 61 basis points lower than July’s 15-month high of 7.44 per cent. Despite slowing down, it continued to stay outside the tolerance band of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The Prime Minister dedicated important rail sector projects worth around ₹6,350 crore and laid the foundation stone of 50-bed each ‘critical care blocks’ to be built in nine districts of Chhattisgarh.
The nine critical care blocks will be built under the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) at a cost of more than ₹210 crore. Prime Minister also distributed one lakh sickle cell counselling cards to the screened population under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSAEM).

Around 2,300 people dead and several others missing in Libya floods. 10,000 people were missing after the unprecedented flooding.
The flash floods killed more than 2,300 people in Derna, the emergency services of the Tripoli-based government. More than 5,000 people were still missing in Derna and about 7,000 others were injured by the force of floodwaters that rushed down a normally dry river valley and hit the city.

Notes:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will use the upgraded AlHosn app to track children’s vaccinations, and children will not be allowed in schools if their vaccination records are not updated on the app. UAE’s national vaccination schedule includes mandatory vaccines for infants and children. The upgraded AlHosn app provides comprehensive vaccination records for children from birth to 18 years.
