Global Day of Parents is observed annually on June 1 to recognise and honour parents and caregivers for their dedication and sacrifices in nurturing children. The observance was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 17 September 2012.

Recently, Kaziranga National Park recorded its first sighting of the Yellow-throated Marten, highlighting Assam’s conservation success. The Yellow-throated Marten, also known as Kharza, is a marten species found across Southern and Eastern Asia. Its distribution extends from the Himalayas to Indonesia and from the Korean Peninsula to the China–Russia border. It is classified as Least Concern in IUCN Red List Status.

Mette Frederiksen secured a third consecutive term as the Prime Minister of Denmark by forming a new centre-left four-party minority coalition government. The coalition includes the Social Democrats, Socialist People’s Party, Radikale Venstre, and Moderates. The new Cabinet has created history as 11 of its 21 ministers are women, marking the first time women hold a majority in a Danish Cabinet. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Frederiksen, and both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership.

Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered two new species of hoverflies: Eristalinus sapphirinus and Eristalinus brunettii. The species were discovered in the Gangetic Plains of West Bengal. Eristalinus sapphirinus is named after its distinctive sapphire-blue metallic coloration. Eristalinus brunettii is named in honor of entomologist Enrico Adelelmo Brunetti. The discovery increases the known diversity of the Eristalinus genus in India.

Scientists recently used the James Webb Space Telescope to map weather patterns on WASP-94A b. WASP-94A b is a gaseous exoplanet located about 700 light-years from Earth. The study revealed distinct morning and evening weather systems in its atmosphere. The discovery was made possible by JWST’s advanced infrared observation capabilities. The findings provide valuable insights into atmospheric circulation and climate processes on distant planets.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is observed annually on 5 June. The day aims to raise awareness about safety at level crossings, where roads and railway tracks intersect. It promotes responsible behaviour among road users, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists to prevent accidents. The theme for 2026 is “Alert Today, Safe Tomorrow”.

The Global Business Research Conference (GBRC) 2026 was held at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade campus in New Delhi. The theme of the conference was “Managing Business Amidst Worldwide Turbulence.” The event brought together academicians, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss business strategies in an uncertain global environment. Discussions focused on India’s growing global economic role, particularly in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and international trade.

Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) are a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs launched in 1998. The scheme aims to provide quality residential education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students from Classes 6 to 12 in remote tribal areas. The programme was revamped in 2018-19 to expand its reach and improve educational infrastructure. Recently, National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) signed an MoU with Learning Links Foundation to implement the Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) programme in EMRSs.

India Men’s Under-18 Hockey Team won the Men’s U-18 Asia Cup 2026 title by defeating Japan 4-1 in the final at Kakamigahara, Japan. India lifted the U-18 Asia Cup title for the third time. Ashish Purti scored a hat-trick, while captain Ketan Kushwaha added one goal. The India Women’s Under-18 Hockey Team secured the bronze medal after defeating South Korea 3-0.

Salim Kumar, National Award-winning Malayalam actor, passed away in Kochi at the age of 57. He began his career through mimicry and television comedy shows and entered cinema in 1996 with the movie Ishtamanu Nooruvattam. Over a career spanning three decades, he acted in around 350 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2010 for his performance in Adaminte Makan Abu. He also received multiple Kerala State Film Awards and acted in Tamil, Odia, and Bengali films.
