Gunner Burkill’s Tomb is a colonial-era monument located in Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh. It was recently delisted from the list of centrally protected monuments through a Central Government Gazette notification. Following delisting, the monument no longer comes under the conservation and protection mandate of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Other Uttar Pradesh sites reportedly delisted include the Telia Nala Buddhist ruins in Varanasi and an ancient Banyan grove in Ghazipur. Archaeological Survey of India functions under the Ministry of Culture and it is responsible for the protection and conservation of centrally protected monuments.

Notes:
California has reported 592 cases of silicosis among engineered-stone countertop workers between January 2019 and June 2026. 65 workers required lung transplants, while 31 died due to the disease. Silicosis is a progressive and incurable lung disease caused by inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust. Engineered stone, also called artificial stone or quartz, can contain more than 90% crystalline silica. Workers are particularly exposed during cutting, grinding and polishing of engineered-stone slabs.

A loggerhead sea turtle weighing over 100 kg was rescued from the Arabian Sea by the Yellow Gate police patrolling team. The distressed turtle was handed over to RAWW (Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare) for treatment and rehabilitation in coordination with the Mangrove Cell. The loggerhead sea turtle is a large migratory marine reptile known for its massive head and powerful jaws. It is found in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. The species is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and plays an important ecological role by consuming hard-shelled marine organisms and recycling nutrients.

The Maharashtra Government launched the state-level ‘Reel for Soil and Water Conservation’ competition across all 36 districts to raise awareness about soil and water conservation. Youth aged 15–30 years can participate by creating 30–60 second Instagram reels on conservation-related themes. The top three district-level winners will receive ₹25,000, ₹15,000 and ₹10,000, along with the title ‘Yuva Mrud-Jaldut’.

National award-winning sculptor and master craftsman Chandrashekhar Y. Shilpi passed away at the age of 75 in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, on August 15, 2026. He was renowned for traditional wood and stone carving, temple architectural elements and ornate Dwarabagilu decorative doorways. Born in Kakkera village of Yadgir district, his artworks reached various parts of India as well as international locations. He received the National Handicraft Award (2024), along with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (2014) and Karnataka Shilpakala Academy Honorary Award (2012).

Notes:
The Orinoco Oil Belt is located in Venezuela, in the southern basin of the Orinoco River. It contains some of the world’s largest deposits of extra-heavy crude oil. The region has gained renewed attention following US licences allowing certain international entities, including ONGC Videsh Limited, to resume upstream petroleum operations. The development is significant for energy security and recovery of pending dividends.

India’s first indigenous Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) fabrication facility has been established in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The facility has been established by QpiAI, a deep-tech startup. It focuses on manufacturing superconducting quantum processors. The facility supports India’s goal of self-reliance in quantum hardware under the National Quantum Mission (NQM).

World Humanitarian Day is observed on 19 August. This year the campaign message is #ActForHumanity, calling for the safety of humanitarian workers and an end to impunity for attacks against them. The day highlights the need for global solidarity, adequate humanitarian funding and protection of aid workers. It also stresses accountability and respect for international humanitarian law, particularly regarding attacks on civilians, medical workers and civilian infrastructure.

Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2025–26 report, released by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), presents a comprehensive picture of India’s school education system. It covers 14.67 lakh schools, 1.03 crore teachers and 24.72 crore students. The overall Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) is 24:1, below the 30:1 benchmark under NEP 2020. Girls constitute 48.4% of enrolment, while women account for 54.9% of teachers. The report also highlights lower dropout rates, improved retention and transition, fewer single-teacher and zero-enrolment schools, and greater focus on inclusive education.

INS Imphal (D68) marked India’s 80th Independence Day with a port call at Sultan Qaboos Port, Muscat, Oman. More than 200 Indian school students in Oman visited the indigenously built destroyer. INS Imphal is a stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy and was commissioned on 26 December 2023. It was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and designed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy. It is the third ship of the Visakhapatnam class (Project 15B). INS Imphal is the first Indian naval warship with dedicated modular accommodation and facilities for women officers and sailors.
