Notes:
World Lung Cancer Day is observed every year on 1 August. The day promotes early detection, awareness, and support for lung cancer patients. The 2026 theme is “Together through lung cancer.” The campaign highlights the importance of Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) screening for high-risk individuals. It calls for equitable access to lung cancer screening and treatment. The campaign raises awareness that lung cancer can also be caused by second-hand smoke, radon, air pollution, and occupational exposure, not just smoking.

Notes:
The 11th All India Police Judo Cluster Championship 2026 concluded in Hyderabad. The championship was hosted by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). It was organised under the All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB). Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) became the overall champion with 203 points. CISF finished as the runner-up with 198 points. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) secured the third position with 139 points.

The Directorate of Settlement and Land Records (DSLR) will begin a month-long inquiry under the NAKSHA pilot programme in Margao, Cuncolim, and Panaji. NAKSHA stands for National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations. It is a GIS-based urban land parcel mapping initiative. It functions under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP). The programme was launched by the Department of Land Resources (DoLR), Ministry of Rural Development.

The Centre informed Parliament about the achievements of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme. The scheme has improved the Child Sex Ratio and promoted the empowerment of girls and women. It focuses on changing societal attitudes towards the girl child through awareness and behavioural change. During the 15th Finance Commission period, BBBP was expanded under the SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti. The scheme now covers all districts of the country through multi-sectoral interventions. According to Health Management Information System (HMIS) data, the national Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) improved from 918 (2014–15) to 929 (2025–26 provisional).

Narayanpur district is using theatre and folk art for rehabilitation through NITARA. NITARA stands for Narayanpur Institute of Tribal and Rural Art. It is an initiative of the Narayanpur district administration in Chhattisgarh. The initiative brings together surrendered Naxals and local youth. It aims to preserve Bastar’s tribal culture and support rehabilitation. 18 surrendered Naxals and local youth completed a 30-day training in acting and theatre. The training was conducted by experts from the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. The participants produced a play called “Chanda Aur Chakor.”

Seema Kaliramna won a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. She recorded a best throw of 58.65 metres. Seema Kaliramna trains at NCOE Patiala. Her best throw came at the halfway stage of the competition. India’s Nidhi Rani finished fourth, narrowly missing the podium.

The Central Government facilitated talks between Odisha and Chhattisgarh for an amicable settlement of the Mahanadi Water Dispute. The Mahanadi is a major east-flowing peninsular river. It originates from the Sihawa Range in Dhamtari district, Chhattisgarh. The river flows through Chhattisgarh and Odisha. It enters Odisha near Cuttack. It drains into the Bay of Bengal near Paradip. Major tributaries include Seonath, Hasdeo, Ib, Ong, Mand, Tel and Jonk. The river is known for its high silt deposition capacity.

UNEP released a report titled “No Transition Without Justice: Strengthening Environmental Rule of Law for People and Planet.” The report was released ahead of the first anniversary of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on climate change obligations. It states that countries are increasingly converting Just Transition commitments into laws, policies, institutions and court decisions. The report defines Just Transition as a fair, inclusive and rights-based shift towards sustainable and resilient economies. The report highlights environmental rule of law, civic participation, justice and finance as key pillars for achieving a Just Transition.

Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel. XWG Diesel is a specialised fuel developed for military vehicles operating in sub-zero temperatures. It was developed jointly by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The fuel remains functional at temperatures as low as –42°C. It prevents diesel from thickening and clogging fuel filters in extreme cold. It enhances the mobility, safety, and operational readiness of military vehicles in high-altitude areas. The fuel complies with Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms. The innovation supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for 2026–27 to 2030–31. The scheme has been approved with a financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore. PM-KISAN was launched in February 2019 to provide income support to eligible landholding farmer families. Under the scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The scheme uses Aadhaar-based authentication, digital verification, and DBT to ensure transparent and timely transfer of funds. Since its launch, more than ₹4.47 lakh crore has been transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts.
