Praveen Kumar has become the first Indian man to win gold in the 48kg category at the  15th Wushu World Championships. In the final, he beat Russel Diaz of Philippines in the men’s Sanda event in Shanghai. Wushu is a Chinese martial art which combines full-contact kickboxing, including close-range punches and kicks, with wrestling, takedowns, throws, sweeps and kicks catch.

IIT Bombay has topped the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) India University Rankings 2020. The QS has ranked the higher education institutions in India on the basis eight parameters of academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty-student ratio (20%), staff with PhD (10%), papers per faculty (10%), citation per paper (5%), international faculty (2.5%) and international students (2.5%). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangaluru has been ranked second followed by the IITs in Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, and Guwahati.

Super Cyclonic Storm Kyarr, after a trail of destruction in Goa, moved away from the West Coast, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting reduction in the rainfall. It was an extremely powerful tropical cyclone that became the first Super Cyclonic Storm over the North Indian Ocean since Gonu in 2007.

Belgian Paralympic champion Marieke Vervoort ended her life through euthanasia at the age of 40. She had announced her intentions after the Rio Games in 2016 to follow that path if her degenerative condition worsened her suffering. Vervoort suffered a degenerative muscle disease that caused constant pain, paralysis in her legs and left her barely able to sleep, and gradually her life became torture. Euthanasia is legal in Belgium.

BharatPe, India’s largest merchant fintech company, has won the DigiDhan Mission Fintech Award 2018-2019 for ‘Innovation in Digital Payments through Emerging Technology’ at the MeitY Startup Summit 2019 held in Delhi. The award was presented by Chief Guest, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Communication, Electronics & IT and Law & Justice.

On October 26, 2019, in the city of Ayodhya 4 lakh earthen lamps were lit along the banks of Sarayu river. The event was organized by the Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath. It was the third and largest Deepotsav in Ayodhya after he came to power. Last year around 3 lakh lamps were lit. The lamp lighting festival comes ahead of SC judgment on Ram Jan Bhoomi.

Government of India has accorded ‘Maharatna’ status to public sector undertaking’s (PSU’s) Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Power Grid Corporation. Two separate orders to this effect were issued by Department of Public Enterprises, under Union Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces of India, raised on 24 October 1962, under the CRPF Act, in the wake of the Sino-Indian War of 1962. It celebrated its 58th raising day on 24th October, 2019.

V Nanammal (99), India’s oldest exponent and teacher of yoga, has passed away near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Born into an agricultural family, she was taught yoga by her father. She went on to master more than 50 postures or asanas, and trained more than a million students – hundreds of them now yoga instructors themselves around the world. She was known affectionately as “Yoga Grandma” & received the Padma Shri – one of India’s highest civilian honours.

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde has been appointed as the 47th Chief Justice of India (CJI) & will take oath as CJI on November 18. He will have tenure of 17 months and would demit office on April 23, 2021.
