Notes:
The World Rabies Day (WRD) is celebrated annually on 28th of September  to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease. The day also marks the anniversary of the of the death of  French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur , who developed the first rabies vaccine. The 2019 theme is ‘Rabies: Vaccinate to Eliminate’.

In Assam, the  ‘Plants for Plastic’ campaign has been launched by the Bongaigaon District administration in a bid to gradually collect and remove the harmful plastics from the eco- system. The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to collect and remove plastic from their houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions. Under this unique initiative, any person can deposit 1Kg plastic in the Municipality office and get a valuable sapling for free.

Recently, India has strongly opposed Pakistan’s propaganda on Kashmir at the General Assembly of 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC-2019) in Uganda’s capital Kampala. The Indian parliamentary delegation was led by the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Earlier, Pakistan had raised the same issue during the 4th South Asian Speakers’ Summit in Male, Maldives. Though, the issues raised by Pakistan were rejected and left out of the Male Declaration.

Noted Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan, a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, has won the M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology. It consists of a citation, trophy and a cheque for Rs 2,51,000.

The floral festival titled ‘Bathukamma’has started in Telangana on 28th September 2019, which is celebrated particularly by the women of state. The 9-day festival takes place towards the end of the monsoon season, just before the onset of winter. Traditionally, Bathukamma is all about worshipping the local goddesses of Telangana and revering to their power during the monsoon season.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named an asteroid after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj. With this, Pandit Jasraj has become the first Indian maestro to have a planet named after him. The asteroid, which is located between Mars and Jupiter, was discovered by Mt. Lemmon Survey  at Mount Lemmon in Arizona  (United States) in November 2006.

Notes:
The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with State-owned construction firm National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) to provide project management consultancy for development of National Sports University at Imphal, Manipur. The approximate cost of project would be Rs 400 crore. The headquarters of NBCC (India) is located in New Delhi.

On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, India’s largest ‘charkha’ (the 1,650-kg spinning wheel) made of used plastic waste was inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani in Noida. The ‘charkha’ symbolizes Gandhi’s dream of Swadeshi (self sufficing and self reliance). It measures 14 ft × 20 ft × 8ft and is made of 1,250 kg of used plastic. The charkha has been recognized as the largest made of used plastic waste in the country by India Book of Records.

India’s first-ever Floating Basketball Court has opened in the Arabian Sea near Bandra Worli Sealink in Mumbai. It was installed by the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA India Games 2019 will feature the Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers, who will play two pre-season games on October 4 and 5 at the Dome in NSCI, SVP Stadium.
