Dr. Srinivas ‘Bobby’ Mukkamala has been elected as the first Indian-origin president of the American Medical Association (AMA) in its 178-year history. Recently, scientists from the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, developed a next-generation device that produces green hydrogen using only solar energy. Green hydrogen is a clean fuel that can help decarbonize industries, power vehicles, and store renewable energy, but producing it affordably at scale has been difficult. The CeNS device splits water molecules using earth-abundant materials without fossil fuels or expensive resources, making it sustainable and scalable.

Indian shuttlers recently delivered their best-ever performance by winning 27 medals at the Asian Para-Badminton Championship 2025 held in Thailand from 17th to 22nd June. The medal tally includes four gold, 10 silver, and 13 bronze medals, marking India’s highest total in the history of this championship. Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan won gold with a straight-sets victory over Ruthick Raghupathi and Manasi Joshi.

Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced that researchers at the Institute of Nanoscience and Technology (INST), Mohali, have developed a smart water filter using sunlight, gentle vibrations, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The innovation addresses pollution caused by industrial wastewater containing harmful dyes like Methylene Blue and Congo Red, which threaten human health and ecosystems. This method ensures continuous purification, even on cloudy days, making it a smart alternative to traditional solar-powered filters.

Recently, Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe made history by becoming the first female and first African President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in its 130-year history. Coventry, a seven-time Olympic medallist in swimming, won the election in one round with 49 out of 97 votes, beating Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. and other candidates. She aims to focus on athlete rights, gender equality, and the sustainability of the Games. She has pledged to expand Olympic participation, especially in Africa, and engage youth.

Recently, INS Udaygiri, the second ship of Project 17A stealth frigates, was delivered to the Indian Navy. Project 17A is a follow-on of the Shivalik class frigates under Project 17 already in service. INS Nilgiri is the first indigenously built stealth frigate under Project 17A. A frigate is a multi-role vessel used for protecting fleet surface ships against enemy ships and aerial threats. These multi-mission frigates can operate in a Blue Water environment to tackle both conventional and non-conventional threats around India’s maritime interests.

The official theme for World Sports Journalists Day 2025 is “Championing Fair Play: Reporting with Integrity and Impact.” Its objective is to respect the professional integrity and courageous reporting of sports journalists. It also aims to highlight the role of communication media in promoting sports culture. The day acknowledges how journalism helps maintain transparency in sports.

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government said 97,158 criminals were convicted under Operation Conviction since July 2023. Operation Conviction was launched on 1 July 2023 to ensure fast justice, especially for serious crimes. Out of 1,14,029 identified cases, 74,388 cases were disposed of, with 69,422 convictions secured. Under the campaign, 68 criminals got the death penalty, 8,172 got life imprisonment, 1,453 were sentenced to over 20 years, and 87,465 got up to 20 years imprisonment. It focused on organised crime, convicting 395 gang members in 272 cases involving top 10 notorious criminals.

It is developed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune and Central Water Commission (CWC), Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti. It is part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) run by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Department of Science and Technology (DST).
