Recently, India rejected a “supplemental award” issued by a Court of Arbitration on the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects, calling it illegal and against the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) 1960. The Court of Arbitration is an ad-hoc international dispute resolution body under Annexure G of the Indus Waters Treaty, 1960, used when bilateral talks fail. The Ratle Hydroelectric Project is run-of-the-river project located on the Chenab River in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir. India maintains its stand that the award violates treaty principles and cannot be accepted under the current agreement.

Recently, in the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme, the Prime Minister of India announced that India has been declared free of Trachoma, a bacterial eye disease. Trachoma is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and spreads through contact with the eyes, eyelids, or throat secretions of infected people. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls it a neglected tropical disease, affecting around 150 million people worldwide. In 2017, India was declared free from infective Trachoma, with surveillance continuing until 2024.

This change reflects its stronger focus on region-specific and mission-driven support for women and child development across India. Recently, the Assam Forest Department began DNA profiling of rhino horns to add them to the Rhino DNA Index System (RhoDIS) India database. RhoDIS India was launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), forest departments of Assam, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) India. RhoDIS is a wildlife forensic tool designed to help in solving wildlife crime cases. It creates a unique genetic signature for each rhino using DNA indexing.

Recently, the US President announced that Washington will send Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine to counter increasing Russian aggression. Patriot (MIM-104) stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target. It is an all-altitude, all-weather, surface-to-air missile defence system. Initially designed for anti-aircraft roles, newer versions can destroy ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and aircraft. It is developed by Raytheon Technologies Corporation, a United States aerospace and defence company. It is the most advanced air defence system used by the United States Army.

Joint research by Pompeu Fabra University (Department of Medicine and Life Sciences – MELIS) and University of Trento, Italy has identified the intestinal microbiome of the indri for the first time. The study analyzed fecal and soil samples from six indri families in northeastern Madagascar. 48 bacterial species were identified in the indri microbiome. Indri (Indri indri, also called babakoto) is a critically endangered lemur endemic to Madagascar’s tropical forests. It is monogamous, lives in matriarchal families, and cannot survive in captivity. Main threats are habitat loss due to climate change and human activity, as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
