Major Infrastructure Projects in Jammu and Kashmir

The Government of India has recently approved 19 infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity and security in the region. The total investment for these projects amounts to Rs 10,637 crore. Among these, four projects stand out due to their strategic importance.
Key Projects
The four crucial projects include:
- Pir Ki Gali Tunnel
- Sadhna Tunnel
- Zaznar-Shopian Road
- Trehgam-Chamkote Road
Each of these projects aims to improve connectivity and accessibility in the region, particularly in border areas.
Pir Ki Gali Tunnel
The Pir Ki Gali tunnel will span 9 km and is estimated to cost Rs 3,830 crore. This tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity along the historic Mughal road. It connects Kashmir to the Pir Panjal region of Jammu. The project aims to keep this vital route operational throughout the year, especially during harsh winter conditions.
Sadhna Tunnel
The Sadhna tunnel, measuring 7 km, will connect Kupwara with Karnah. This project is budgeted at Rs 3,330 crore. Currently, the route faces severe disruptions during winter due to snowfall and avalanches. The Sadhna tunnel will ensure year-round access to this strategically important border area.
Zaznar-Shopian Road
The 28-km road stretch from Zaznar to Shopian will be constructed at a cost of Rs 836 crore. This road is also a high-priority project. It is part of the larger effort to improve road connectivity from the Mughal road to Baramulla. Enhanced access to Shopian is expected to facilitate trade and movement in the region.
Trehgam-Chamkote Road
The existing Trehgam-Chamkote road, a 68-km stretch, will undergo improvements at a cost of Rs 966 crore. This road connects Kupwara to Teetwal, which is near the Line of Control. Enhancing this road will boost logistical support for security forces and improve civilian access to border areas.
Strategic Importance of the Projects
These projects hold immense strategic significance. They are designed to enhance border infrastructure amid growing security concerns. The government aims to reduce dependence on the NH44 national highway, which is vulnerable in crisis situations. Alternative routes like the Mughal road are crucial for maintaining access to the Kashmir valley. The new highways and tunnels will also support military logistics. They will ensure that forces can reach remote areas quickly. The Border Roads Organisation will oversee the construction of the Pir Ki Gali and Sadhna tunnels. This shift in project management aims to expedite completion timelines.
